We always like to make life easier where we can - especially when we're working with music technology, which has a terrible habit of being complicated!

Thankfully, many manufacturers make the first step an easy one by putting the mixing desk and speakers into handy 'all in one' packages - so all you need are your instruments!

One of the best basic systems is the Samson XP40iW. This is a single 40w speaker with 2 inputs and comes with an iPod dock and a microphone too. This is ideal for simple public address, busking or work in church halls, schools and the like for that occasional need for some extra volume.

The Samson XP40i and Adastra EZPA

Another basic unit worth considering is the Adastra EZPA (Literally, easy PA!). This is a single 30w speaker with 3.5mm headphone jack for music from a phone or CD player, and 1/4" socket for a microphone or instrument connection. It comes with a Handheld microphone, wireless headset and receiver and a tie clip microphone too. Great for fitness classes, presentations or schools!

That's all well and good, but I'm in a band. Those are far too small!

Don't worry - there's plenty to choose from!

The Samson XP308i is a great intermediate level PA system. With an 8 channel mixer (featuring a built in iPod dock) packing 300 watts of power through 2 included speakers, this is a great investment for the band on a budget. With XLR and 1/4" jack inputs, there's nothing you can't use it with. It also has RCA outputs for high fidelity recording.

For the more discerning or the budding sound engineer, Yamaha's StagePas systems have long held a fantastic reputation in the industry. Combining affordability with outstanding quality, the StagePas systems have been the backdrop of many a stage show.

Samson XP308i and Yamaha StagePas 400i

The Stagepas 400i features an 8 channel mixer with a 400 watt amplifier. With iPhone and iPod connectivity, there's very little you can't do. Designed to be lugged from gig to gig, they're hard wearing but easy to transport and set up.

If that still isn't enough, the Stagepas 600i has a 680 watt mixer with 10 channel inputs. Setup with an onboard feedback suppressor  and 3-band channel EQ , you also have access to high resolution SPX digital reverbs where there are 4 types with parameter control. All this and more with the iPhone and iPod connectivity as well as the option to switch the inputs between Stereo and Mono for true surround sound make this one of the best Portable PA Systems on the market.
