We always like to make life easier where we can - especially when we're working with music technology, which has a terrible habit of being complicated!
Thankfully, many manufacturers make the first step an easy one by putting the mixing desk and speakers into handy 'all in one' packages - so all you need are your instruments!
One of the best basic systems is the Samson XP40iW. This is a single 40w speaker with 2 inputs and comes with an iPod dock and a microphone too. This is ideal for simple public address, busking or work in church halls, schools and the like for that occasional need for some extra volume.

Another basic unit worth considering is the Adastra EZPA (Literally, easy PA!). This is a single 30w speaker with 3.5mm headphone jack for music from a phone or CD player, and 1/4" socket for a microphone or instrument connection.
