There are lots of keyboards on the market. Beginners keyboards, synthesiser keyboards, full sized keyboards, midi keyboards... the choice can be somewhat overwhelming!

Helpfully, however, only a handful feature a unique learning option - keys that light up.

Light up keys are a different way of learning. While nothing beats the traditional approach, learning with lights is a different way which can be good for children with learning difficulties, those unable to read sheet music or simply for a bit of fun!

The Casio LK-120 and the Yamaha EZ220

Two of the best entry level units on the market are the Casio LK-120 and the Yamaha EZ220. So what's the difference?

Casio -

  • 12 note polyphony
  • 100 Preset tones
  • 100 Songs
  • 50 rhythms
  • 3 Step Lesson System
  • Can be battery powered
  • 2 10cm 2 watt Speakers
Yamaha -
  • 32 Note polyphony
  • 392 Preset tones
  • 100 Rhythms
  • 100 Songs
  • Yamaha Education System - Y.E.S
  • 2 12cm 2.5 watt speakers
  • Can be battery powered
So on paper the Yamaha is the better of the two keyboards - but that is reflected in the price, as the Yamaha is about £50 more. Both keyboards are great for beginners but the Yamaha does offer just that little bit more which may help it's longevity. In most of these cases a bigger initial investment can give greater rewards in not needing to be replaced so quickly.
