Hi,
I'm looking at the Yamaha clarinets and wonder if you could tell me what the differences are between the 450 and 450M clarinets?

Hi Tim,
To combat problems often inherent in wooden instruments, the YCL450M introduces a state of the art protective layer of resin next to the air column. This innovative technology, which premiered with the Yamaha oboes, has been brought to the clarinet after extensive engineering specific to the instrument. The upper joint body is drilled out slightly larger around the bore and tone-holes. Thermoplastic ABS resin is injected into the cavity, instantly forming the inner shape of a clarinet. It is designed to preserve as much virtue of traditional clarinets as possible, while its natural appearance is hardly distinguishable from conventional all-wooden models.
Other improvements over the standard 450 model include a new register vent tube shape, which improves pronunciation in the second register. Whereas the YCL-450 needs sufficient air pressure for good response, the YCL-450M offers great response even with low air pressure, making it easy to play even for children.
Essentially the 450M offers a layer of plastic protection internally which helps combat moisture and other problems that can affect the wooden instruments, reducing the need for servicing and extending the life of the instrument. I can only imagine that there would be a small difference in tonal quality, but you'd have to try two together to see if it was a big enough difference to change your mind.
